22-23 Second Harvest Mobile Market Nutrition Educator

Building Healthier Communities Through Food will make needed food supplies and nutrition education more accessible to people in the margins of the economy in Spokane and Eastern Washington. The AmeriCorps member will provide nutrition education alongside Mobile Market free food distributions in high-need neighborhoods and communities. These distributions are held in church parking lots, schools, youth programs, community centers, senior centers and at other easily accessible locations. The AmeriCorps member will lead demonstrations, nutritious food sampling, recipe sharing and other nutrition education interventions aimed at building healthy eating habits and improving food security among children, families and seniors. The Mobile Market distributions will provide fresh produce and other wholesome groceries at no cost that improve food security. Nutrition education will encourage healthy eating habits for children, their parents and seniors. It will help families make optimal use of limited resources to prepare nourishing meals. The Mobile Market will target high-need neighborhoods and food deserts to increase access to fresh produce and other groceries for families and seniors in need. The food supplies will free up resources for financially strapped people to pay for housing, utilities, gas for a car to get to school or work, children's clothing, life-saving medications, and other household expenses. Second Harvest was founded in 1971 as a central warehouse for a handful of food pantries in Spokane. Today, hunger solution centers in Spokane and the Tri-Cities partner with 250 neighborhood food banks, meal sites and other programs to feed more than 55,000 people each week. Position is contingent upon funding.
