2013 HandsOn Tech - Pittsburgh

Hands On Tech VISTA members are placed in eight cities across the country to advance the anti-poverty work of non-profit organizations serving low-income communities. This project builds the capacity of these organizations to effectively use technology to support mission driven strategies that ultimately bring individuals out of poverty. The VISTA members increase capacity by developing the technological skills and knowledge of local community members who are stepping into leadership roles for community change. VISTAs also recruit local skills-based community volunteers who continue to serve in the community. This sustainable model not only increases organizational efficiency but also provides community-based technology training, vital employment skills and connects local community organizations. This more effective use of technology enhances service delivery and leads to greater impact on issues facing low income individuals or families in urban centers. Each local HandsOn Tech Team will engage in the following activities as a team; however we are seeking expertise in three distinct areas for each local team: (1) Engagement: Engaging nonprofit assessment partners, nonprofit training partners, and community leaders in assessment and training opportunities. (2) Cloud Based Computing: Incorporating cloud based online applications and systems into nonprofit and community capacity building and training efforts. (3) Technical Assistance: Developing the systems to provide hardware support and ongoing technical assistance, also developing the sustained Skills Based Volunteer technical support program. HandsOn Tech members develop the nonprofit sectors effective use of technology in order to to increase community resources and improve outcomes for low-income communities and families.

Member Duties : Members and skills-based volunteers will work with 10 to 15 select non-profits in each community to increase capacity, efficiency and organizational outcomes through the adoption of new technology. Members and skill-based volunteers will complete a technology assessment of the selected non-profits to identify ways to enhance their web presence and use of web-based applications or other technology. A technology plan will be developed and implemented based on the needs and priorities of the organization. The project will provide training for nonprofit staff, board members and volunteers to make effective use of the new technology. As a result of your contribution to the VISTA project: communities will be left a cadre of trained volunteer leaders who can answer questions about technology and applications. Members and skills-based volunteers will focus on web-based tools that are free or low-cost for nonprofits, as well as develop toolkits to help nonprofits navigate the marketplace.
