Alliance VISTA - VISTA Leader
Recent data from the US Census Bureau show Arizona ranks highly among the worst poverty rates in the nation. In 2011, compared to the nationwide 15.9%, 19.1% of Arizonans (more than 1.2 million residents) were living below the poverty level. Poverty rates rising faster than the nationwide average illuminate the need to address the critical challenges within Arizona communities across the state. The Governor’s Office of Education Innovation produced the Arizona Ready Report Card which indicated that Arizona ranks 11th among the 50 states and DC for highest percentage of food insecure households. The report also showed that Arizona ranked 46th in reading and 44th in math scores among the 50 states and DC for the 4th grade National Assessment of Educational Progress. A significant body of research demonstrates that the challenges of rural America are unique and distinct from those of urban and metropolitan areas. Rural areas are characterized by low population density, a larger elderly population, poorer general health, a limited and/or fragile economic base, higher rates of unemployment, transportation issues that limit travel and more. Paired with these challenges, rural communities also have limited access to resources and services. Traditionally, nonprofits serve as a critical part of our infrastructure that copes with these issues. When asked to identify their greatest challenge to meeting increased community needs, the top responses include achieving long term financial sustainability, cuts in funding and not enough staff. The Alliance VISTA program has a demonstrated history of successfully strengthening and expanding the capacity of nonprofits and their abilities to impact the critical issue areas of Economic Opportunity, Healthy Futures, Education and Veterans and Military Families.
