Susquehanna University - PACC

Susquehanna University (SU) seeks an energetic, creative leader to build capacity at our Campus Garden and through that, strengthen our partnership with Haven Ministry, an independent, community-based homeless shelter in nearby Sunbury unaffiliated with any particular religion. The Campus Garden has operated for several years under a community-supported agriculture model with moderate success, but with the potential for much greater production and programming. Plans have been developed for a hybrid model of land use in which SU student organizations and community members would each have opportunity to grow food at the Campus Garden, a large portion of which would be donated to local food pantries. Parallel to these efforts, Susquehanna University has developed a robust connection with Haven Ministry, which provides three meals a day to residential clients, as well as food for low-income community members at risk of experiencing homelessness. Each semester SU engages in a university-wide food drive for Haven, and student groups periodically volunteer at Haven to prepare meals or work as overnight volunteers. The VISTA will 1) coordinate student volunteer groups who would grow food in part for Haven Ministry. 2) He/she will help build capacity at the Campus Garden through facilitating the development of enhanced infrastructure such as raised beds, improved irrigation, and construction of a hoop house. 3) She/he will promote community involvement in the garden through educational and outreach programs for community members and students. 4) As food production increases, the VISTA will strengthen the relationship between Haven and SU by directing food yielded from the garden to Haven. The food will be used to cook meals at the shelter with participation of SU volunteer groups organized by the VISTA, distributed to local families in need, and preserved at Haven for later use.
