GHCC/Arts on the Block - Communications and Marketing Assoc.

This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Arts on the Block (AOB) in Wheaton, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to AOB and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources. Since its founding in 2003, Arts on the Block’s (AOB) mission has been to empower creative youth to imagine and shape fulfilling futures and contribute to the quality of life in their communities. AOB achieves its mission by providing real-world experiences in the arts, educational guidance and entrepreneurial training geared to their unique capabilities. The AOB studio and administrative offices are located in Wheaton, MD, where the median family income (MFI) is roughly 60% of the county-wide MFI, and even lowerfor Latino families. Furthermore, only 50% of Latinos are high school graduates. Planning for and achieving high school graduation and a gainful career is a difficult task for most, but it is even more challenging for youth facing obstacles typically contributing to poverty. These include unemployment, poorly-performing schools, lack of access to academic enrichment opportunities, gangs, violence and language and other socio-economic barriers. It is statistics like these that drive AOB to seek opportunities to provide youth with quality programs that tap into their strengths, while instilling knowledge and skills about work and life. With dwindling funds, it is increasingly difficult to operate the quality programs for which AOB is known; thus, the need forpromoting its programs to funders and the community for support.
