The Apple Corps project addresses the root causes of obesity, malnutrition and hunger in underserved communities and works to promote healthy eating and active living for children living in poverty and experiencing oppression. It is directly linked to Solid Ground's mission to fight the root causes of poverty and oppression. Apple Corps is also a a key program within Solid Ground’s Hunger Action Center, which serves more than 11,000 people each year through creative programs that increase access to healthy food and provide nutrition education to children and families most at risk for hunger and obesity.

Member Duties : An AmeriCorps member will help Lettuce Link expand the availability of fresh, locally grown produce in food banks and meal programs by developing systems and support that enable more community gardeners and fruit tree owners to raise and donate produce. Additionally, the member will help promote food security and backyard gardening through outreach events, seed distribution at food banks, and working at Marra Farm. Specifically, the member will 1) Teach elementary school aged children about nutrition and gardening at Marra Farm and document successes and challenges 2) Coordinate volunteers as they harvest fruit in one neighborhood 3) Assist limited income residents grow their own food by distributing seeds, plant starts and gardening & nutrition information at food banks.
