CTCC: Southern CT State University

CT Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program was developed in 2008 to address the local needs of low-income communities and to be a mechanism for community change. Through campus based placements, our AmeriCorps VISTA members build, support, and deepen partnerships between campuses and local organizations in two areas: education and economic opportunity. These partnerships will strengthen the capacity of local organizations to alleviate poverty in low-income communities by leveraging the resources of higher education institutions. The VISTA member with Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) will create a campus wide Community Engagement Program that coordinates and promotes a clear framework of community engagement activities for new students at SCSU students. The identification, support and/or creation of service programming and partnerships on campus and within the community will support at risk students ability to graduate from college with marketable skills and opportunities for leadership outside the classroom. The project will address capacity building with a first-year goal of 100% first-year student participation (projected: 1,300 incoming freshmen students). Experiential opportunities that support at risk students in retention, persistence and overall college success will be identified and supported throughout this project.

Member Duties : The Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) AmeriCorps member will coordinate the community service plan for all first-year students in collaboration with the Director of First Year Experience (FYE) and first-year seminar instructors; including site placement, student volunteer training and participation tracking; resulting in 100% first-year student participation in some form of community service opportunity offered to SCSU students. The VISTA will work with Student Success Task Force “Campus and Community Engagement” work group to identify and support high quality experiences which enhance the educational outcomes of our students, by building strong relationships with each other on campus as well as within the community. In collaboration with our Peer Mentors, the VISTA will coordinate and promote service efforts among student clubs and organizations resulting in increased freshman participation and increased community support from the SCSU campus.
