FIT VISTA - Greater Nashua Continuum of Care Coordinator

Harbor Homes, Inc. is applying to be the host site of a VISTA that will serve the Greater Nashua Continuum of Care (GNCOC), a community group comprised of nonprofit organizations, public agencies, local businesses, and concerned citizens to organize and deliver housing and services to meet the specific needs of people who are homeless as they move to stable housing and maximum self-sufficiency. It includes action steps to end homelessness and prevent a return to homelessness. The GNCOC receives more than $1.7 million in US Department of Housing and Urban Development funding that is then passed through to other agencies working with the homeless to provide them with permanent supportive and transitional housing, as well as supportive services such as employment assistance and homeless outreach. The money prevents or ends homelessness for more than 500 individuals annually. In order to receive the funding, the GNCOC member agencies must achieve certain benchmarks and track their outcomes; report these to HUD; and reapply for funds every year based on how well they are doing as a community group on solving homelessness in the Greater Nashua area. A written Ending Homelessness Plan was created ten years ago and is updated often to be used as a comprehensive guide to achieving the goals of the GNCOC. The federal government recently enacted new regulations that all Continua of Care must adhere to by the fall of2014 in order to maintain their region’s homeless assistance housing. Because the GNCOC is not a nonprofit organization, it has no staff member to implement the many facets of the new regulations. Its entire membership is comprised of volunteers, the majority of whom have full time jobs in the human service sector. As such, it is critical that at least one member act as the full time GNCOC Coordinator, in order to implement the new federal regulations and ensure that funds for the homeless continue for years to come.
