Connecticut Food Justice Youth Corps VISTA Project

Connecticut Food Justice Youth Corps VISTA project partners currently seeking VISTA Members are: Hartford Food System/GROW Hartford (www.hartfordfood.org), CitySeed (www.cityseed.org) in New Haven, WRCC/GROW Windham in Willmantic (www.growwindham.org), TEEG in northeastern CT (www.teegonline.org), and North End Action Team in Middletown (www.neatmiddletown.org). University of Connecticut Extension, in partnership with some of the most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations in low-income communities in Connecticut (see above) currently coordinates this multi-site project with six to seven VISTA members slots in 2015-2016. The project vision is to support a generation of youth leaders (age 13-18) with the skills to move communities across Connecticut toward a just food system. VISTA Members in the project will help: 1. Build a collaborative forum for sharing best practices and curriculum among 8 project sites. 2. Build the capacity of youth food justice and leadership programming at each project site and with partner organizations in each community. 3. Facilitate a statewide youth council, with representatives from low-income communities, to network and plan a youth leadership conference around the theme of food justice.

Member Duties : Connecticut Food Justice Youth Corps VISTA members serve at high-impact organizations (host sites) helping facilitate and implement the programs that empower youth in low-income communities through the lens of food justice. [Food Justice aims to ensure that the benefits and risks of producing, distributing, and consuming food are shared fairly by all. A healthy and just food system requires broad participation that is robust, productive, equitable, and sustainable.] Each VISTA member will help build the capacity of the youth leadership program at their host sites; duties will vary depending on the host site. As a statewide program, VISTA members will also work together as a team to share best practices across host sites.
