NH Food Bank Volunteer Engagement VISTA

The New Hampshire Food Bank a program of Catholic Charities New Hampshire serves as the only Food Bank in the state. The NH Food Bank and its programs provide support to the 1 in 9 men and women and 11% of children living in food insecure environments; meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from. Food insecurity can affect anyone at any time due to under or unemployment, homelessness, or the rising opioid epidemic. It is important to tackle the hunger crisis by spreading awareness and addressing the root causes. As a Volunteer Engagement VISTA hunger can be addressed by developing a “NH Food Bank Youth Ambassador” program and planning a “Kids Day” event, which will allow the opportunity for us to educate our youth and engage them in supporting a need that directly affects their peers, while also introducing them to the importance of community and service. Volunteers are a critical component of the NH Food Bank’s need to meet demands. In 2017 the Food Bank distributed 13.7 million pounds of food across our more than 425 partner agencies throughout the state. Volunteer hours totaled 19,600 hours which is equivalent to 9 full time employees.

Member Duties : The VISTA Member will help to increase awareness of food insecurity in the state and the critical role the NH Food Bank serves in providing hunger relief assistance to those living in impoverished communities by creating, enhancing or implementing systems to maximize volunteer engagement at the NH Food Bank. The addition of 50 or more volunteers introduced to the Food Bank will increase our capacity to sort through and distribute food, and will also increase our ability to raise monetary donations via fundraising events. Ambassadors, adolescent and adult volunteers will help to inform students, teachers, and parents about the NH Food Bank and the needs around food insecurity in NH.
