Refugee Support Network - CRB, Summer

The Coalition for Refugees from Burma (CRB) has been helping refugees from Burma since 2006. Established as a Mutual Assistance Association and registered 501c(3) in 2009, CRB's goal is to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate social support services to improve the living conditions and quality of life of resettled refugees. CRB intentionally reaches across ethnic, religious and language barriers to foster community cohesion and build capacity. CRB is one of the seven organizations that make up the Refugee Support Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA team that increases services to refugees and immigrants living in King County by building capacity and coordinating activities and services.

Member Duties : For the past two years, CRB has partnered with Kent and Seattle School Districts to provide services that will help ensure refugee youth from Burma are successful in school and beyond. To do so, CRB has provided a variety of educational support programming for students, their families, and school personnel (such as professional development programming for school staff, education workshops for parents focused on navigating the school system, workshops for youth focusing on the transition to college, direct mentoring and tutoring for students, assistance at parent-teacher conferences, and other general support). The Summer Youth Program VISTA Associate will enable CRB’s Summer Programs to increase the number of students enrolled in the program and the number of hours students spend engaged in academics during the summer months. The Summer VISTA will work closely with the CRB VISTA Youth Programs Coordinator to plan, structure, and implement CRB’s Summer Youth Program.
