Refugee Support Network - School's Out WA, Summer

School’s Out Washington (SOWA) is a statewide organization serving the afterschool and youth development (AYD) field, dedicated to building community systems to support quality AYD programs for Washington’s 5-18 year olds through training, advocacy and leadership. SOWA administers the federal Refugee School Impact Grant (RSIG) for Washington State by funding district-community partnerships to serve refugee students. Partnership activities include afterschool/summer programs, school-day tutorials, parent supports, refugee information for educators, and academic training for community staff. The project strives to increase academic performance, English proficiency and school integration for 5-18 year old refugee students, who have been in the country for three years or less. In addition, the project works to increase the skills of the parents, educators, and community staff to better support students. School's Out develops resources and trainings to support those partnerships. School's Out is one of the seven organizations that make up the Refugee Support Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA team that increases services to refugees and immigrants living in King County by building capacity and coordinating activities and services.
