AmeriCorps VISTA Prevention Specialist in Homer
 
 
 
Rates of domestic violence, teen dating violence, and sexual assault are of great concern in Alaska. Historically, efforts have been focused on responding to incidences of violence, but it is possible to stop it! The Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault VISTA Program gives members the opportunity to put an end to violence in the state by building capacity for primary prevention of domestic and sexual violence both locally and statewide. Members will work with prevention programs like Girls on the Run and Coaching Boys into Men, build coalitions to address DVSA on the local level, work with media to bring awareness to develop skills and build awareness around DVSA, and much more. **Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550) for members moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, all expenses paid training, an Education Award ($5,550) or cash stipend, and a $3,000 stipend for housing.

Member Duties : South Peninsula Haven House is an emergency shelter in Homer, Alaska which provides services to victims of violence and promotes healthy families throughout the lower Kenai peninsula. The VISTA member will be instrumental in building capacity for domestic violence/sexual assault prevention at Haven House and the community at large. The VISTA will be engaged in participating in local prevention coalitions, developing and implementing prevention strategies such as Green Dot, Compass: A Guide for Men, Photo Voice, and Fourth R in Homer and surrounding communities, and building relationships with local school systems, working toward the implementation of the domestic violence/sexual assault prevention curricula, primarily in the areas of youth and male engagement.
