First 5 Orange County Western Youth Services

Western Youth Services’ mission is to improve the quality of life in our community, maximize human potential and promote culturally sensitive self-sufficiency through programs that prevent and treat mental, emotional and behavioral problems of youth and their families. We strive to ensure that every child in Orange County has the chance to live a happy, successful, and fulfilled life by providing prevention programs, specialized mental health services to at risk children, outreach for transitional age youth, and family resources. WYS has been around for over 40 years and has been predominantly government funded. WYS does not have dedicated staff or resources for developing additional sustainable funding sources and has created a plan to: Develop a Communication and Marketing Plan; Develop a WYS style guide; Match our website with our emerging brand and enhanced marketing language; and Develop “interlocking” or “layered” collateral materials. WYS has identified the need to establish a Development Department which will follow through on the above items and over look Fundraising, Special Events, Branding, Marketing, and Grant Writing. The VISTA member will gain experience launching a series of marketing initiatives that will increase services to the underserved in Orange County. The member will help create the infrastructure and processes for the Development Dept in order to improve WYS’ relationship to the public, donors, and create an ongoing grant writing process, etc. . The VISTA Member will have direct roles that involve contacting event sponsors and businesses, holding conference meetings, investigating locations, picking up donations, communicating with heads of other departments, working with the graphic design company for WYS, and writing, editing, and distributing press releases and grants. The VISTA Member will also work with Dr. Leigh and her assistant to prepare for speaking engagements.
