First 5 Orange County Discovery Science Center

The mission of Discovery Science Center is to educate young minds, assist educators to teach science and technology in an increasingly compelling manner, and increase public understanding and appreciation of science, math and technology through interactive exhibits and programs. DSC is seeking a VISTA member to assist with the establishment of ABC Zone: Learning through Adventure, Books and Curiosity. ABC Zone will include: (a) galleries for traveling exhibits designed for the young child. Hands-on exhibits which promote safe exploration and discovery by babies and toddlers encourage the type of brain development and social interaction which promotes school readiness. (b) a reading room to promote early literacy. Signage will educate parents about the stages of learning and actions they can take, staff members will lead “story time,” and books will feature characters from the travelling exhibit when available. (c) a room for song and dance. Knowing familiar songs can ease the transition to school, and children will be guided to develop skills, such as following directions (clap), social behaviors (hold hands in a circle), and early literacy by associating words and images on the screen with sounds and words in the song.
