CTCC: Three Rivers Community College

The Connecticut Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program was developed in 2008 to address the local needs of low-income communities and to be a mechanism for community change. Through campus based placements, our AmeriCorps VISTA members build, support, and deepen partnerships between campuses and local organizations in the areas of education and economic opportunity. These partnerships strengthen the capacity of local organizations to alleviate poverty in low-income communities by leveraging the resources of higher education institutions. Three Rivers Community College is located in Norwich, Connecticut in southeastern Connecticut. The student body, about 5,000 enrolled students, is a diverse group comprised of both traditional and non-traditional students. The poverty rate of Norwich is 14.4%, compared to 9.2% for the State overall. Many community members and students live in poverty and are in need of assistance. The Service Learning Committee addressed this need by starting an on-campus food pantry this year. The VISTA plays a key role in determining how to make the food pantry sustainable, including assisting with volunteer management, fund raising, collaborating with community organizations, and grant writing. The VISTA will also be an important part in continuing to integrate Service Learning into the college's curriculum.
