Urban Boatbuilders (Development) -- St. Paul VISTA Program

Urban Boatbuilders (UBB) is a youth development organization serving at-risk teens that uses the building of wooden boats as a vehicle to develop academic, life and work skills. Through two signature programs, community partnerships and apprenticeships, Urban Boatbuilders serves hundreds of youth across the Twin Cities Metro region each year. First, through the partnership program, Urban Boatbuilders works schools, community organizations, and juvenile corrections facilities to provide both in and out-of-school programming for groups of 10 – 15 students at risk of dropping out of school, at risk for continued involvement with the juvenile justice system, and vulnerable to risks associated with youth experiencing poverty. The second signature program, the Apprenticeship Program, provides a more intensive development experience for high school aged youth the majority of whom are reentering society from juvenile corrections settings. Statistically at a high risk of re-offending, Urban Boatbuilders provides a structured three-day per week paid apprenticeship for these youth. For many, this provides them with the first opportunity they have had to positively contribute to their families and their communities while developing their job-readiness skills for a successful future. The Outreach and Development VISTA will gain broad experience in nonprofit management while focusing on outreach and communications to spread the word about Urban Boatbuilders programs as well as to raise the funds necessary to serve our mission, as well as support and expand our programming. We hope you will consider joining the Urban Boatbuilders team! **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
