Veterans Recovery Project of CT - Mental Health Outreach

Currently there are 12,400 Veterans receiving mental health care in Connecticut, with more than 4,200 of them seeking specialized services at the Errera Community Care Center. Many other Veterans also need mental health care but, due to stigma, fear, inaccessibility, and other issues, do not seek or otherwise do not receive it. The Veterans Recovery Project of Connecticut is a multi-site AmeriCorps VISTA project consisting of a collaboration of organizations in the New Haven and Bridgeport areas that serve Veterans experiencing homelessness, unemployment, legal issues, and serious mental illness. The partner organizations will place seven AmeriCorps VISTA members to work to address these issues. The VISTA member assigned to Mental Health Outreach position will support the Errera Community Care Center and Connecticut’s veterans by striving to identify and eliminate barriers to care. The VA Connecticut Health Care System’s Errera Community Care Center offers a wide array of psychosocial services to Veterans in support of their recovery, including supported employment; therapeutic groups; a wellness center; and various case-management and housing programs. Successful applicants will have: • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Creative and innovative thinking. • Good collaboration skills. • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. • Good time management and organizational skills. • A demonstrated interest in working in the community and working with Veterans. • A demonstrated interest in mental health and poverty. • At least some college preferred, as the VISTA will actively participate in postdoctoral psychosocial-rehabilitation seminars at the VA Campus in West Haven.
