Serve RI Providence Reads Project Coordinator
 
 
 
Providence Reads is Mayor Taveras’ citywide effort to ensure that more low-income children succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship by focusing on the most important predictor of school success and high school graduation: grade-level reading by the end of third grade. In July 2012, Providence was one of 14 communities – from a pool of more than 124 – selected as an All-America City by the National Civic League for its plan to ensure that 70% of third graders are reading on grade level by 2015, up from 46% in 2011. Leyendo is a new program of Providence Reads, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Cities of Service, to leverage impact volunteering to increase the number of Providence’s English language learners reading proficiently by end of third grade. The AmeriCorps*VISTA will directly support the management, coordination and marketing of Providence Reads and Leyendo initiative. The position will be physically based at the Children's Youth Cabinet at Brown University with direct supervision by the Mayor's Senior Advisor for Education. Primary Duties include: 1. Manage workflow for the Leyendo bilingual reading initiative currently operating at Lauro Elementary school. Leyendo pairs 25 bilingual/biliterate volunteers with 50 second and third grade students. 2. Plan and assist in implementing Providence Reads expansion, conduct needs assessment and research. 3. Coordinate Providence Reads communication and events by working with Mayor’s Office Communications teams and Children and Youth Cabinet. 4. Support Children and Youth Cabinet’s Grade Level workgroup
