Higher Ground Academy -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The Academy’s mission is to nurture every student to meet 21st Century standards of education through rigorous preparation for post-secondary studies. Higher Ground Academy is one of the first public charter schools developed in Minnesota. Its student body is composed of more than 700 primarily East African immigrant and first-generation children from Somalia and Ethiopia. HGA is dedicated to creating a socially committed, morally responsible, and ethnically diverse learning environment focused on multiculturalism, high expectations for achievement, a rigorous curriculum and an ongoing measurement and assessment model. In the fall of 2014, Higher Ground will launch an evening educational program that provides academic enrichment for the parents and children of grades 3-5 who are enrolled at the school. Higher Ground believes that such an academic enrichment program will address three community needs: 1. It will reduce the achievement gap between African American and Caucasian students in the City of St. Paul. This program will contribute to the preparation of HGA students for post-secondary admission and success. 2. It will improve the basic formal education skills, i.e., reading, language skills and math skills, of both the parents and their children. The program will also provide pre-GED preparation for the parents via reading and math programs. 3. This program will enhance the parents’ abilities to support the academic success of their children. This in turn will enhance the educational aspirations of both the parents and their children and strengthen the community. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
