Fred Wells Tennis/Education Center -- St. Paul VISTA Program
FWTEC is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit incorporated in 2002 by Twin Cities’ businessman, Fred Wells, who had a vision for a community center that provides affordable access to tennis, education, and life skill development for all, particularly underserved youth. The facility has eight tennis courts, a fitness center, a computer lab and over 4000 square feet of classrooms for use by the public and by our youth development programs. Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center is located at Fort Snelling, prompting our moniker—The Fort—which embodies our commitment to being a safe, nurturing, and welcoming place for all. Operating as both an affordable public tennis facility, and youth development nonprofit, we are a revenue-generating non-profit—that is, a substantial portion of the patron fees and proceeds from all of our fee-based programming, goes directly towards our mission of serving low-income Twin Cities’ youth. Tennis2College is the youth development continuum at the heart of our mission of empowering youth to be successful on and off the court. Through eight program components focusing on tennis, life-skills and academics, we annually assist over 300 3rd-12th grade students find a pathway to college and other post-secondary options. Over 90% of youth enrolled in T2C qualify for free and reduced lunch, and face significant socio-economic disadvantages. T2C provides high quality learning opportunities beyond the classroom; academic support and enrichment through high school graduation; and increased participation of youth with limited access to out-of-school time programs due to income, transportation, and/or language/culture barriers. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
