As an educator, the VISTA will inform the community of the obesity epidemic in Douglas County & the work being done to change it. 1 Plan issue-based educational events 2 Nominate community partners, students, faculty & staff for recognition 3 Assist with annual report highlighting campus-community partnerships 4 Develop online/social media communication resources 5 Write articles/press releases to publicize local obesity problems & progress As a community organizer, the VISTA will work with community members & stakeholders to fulfill the strategic, policy level priorities of the Healthier Douglas County Coalition (HDCC) & Northwest Wisconsin Community Services Agency (NWCSA) 1 Understand & work to meet health policy priorities of HDCC & NWCSA 2 Understand how Service-Learning can be used to address issue 3 Create asset map of health resources in Douglas Co. & specific Superior communities 4 Plan local community service projects & awareness events 5 Further develop HDCC advisory group, ensuring it meets the 51% low income guidelines 6 Develop assessment tools for community partner & service recipient feedback 7 Administer baseline and post-intervention surveys 8 Build a bridge between community & campus to address community health needs 9 Seek support to sustain project activities As a Coordinator, the VISTA will work to recruit faculty members to integrate Academic Service-Learning into their courses to directly implement the healthier lifestyle policies developed by the Healthier Douglas County Coalition and NWCSA. 1 Recruit faculty to develop Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) courses specific to health issues 2 Assist faculty with ASL courses & community partnership development 3 Create class presentations & orientations for students in ASL courses 4 Design ASL student projects pertaining to health issues 5 Maintain regular communication with community agencies 6 Evaluate and improve ASL courses

Member Duties : At the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Center for Academic Service-Learning (CAS-L), the WiCC AmeriCorps*VISTA member will work to reduce obesity among youth and families by addressing policy level, healthy lifestyle choices in Douglas County. This first year VISTA position is a balance between educating, and community organizing for a healthier Douglas County.
