Volunteer Iowa: IPTV Ready for School
 
 
 
The Volunteer Iowa/Iowa Public Television Ready for School initiative will assist Iowa communities in implementing community-based plans to improve the math and literacy skills of children ages 2 to 8 from low-income families through training and resource education and increased access to high-quality educational media resources for families, caregivers, and educators. This initiative will use a comprehensive approach to community engagement with multiple community organizations in 25 communities in Iowa and is designed to help children increase their school readiness. Ready for School will definitely meet the mission of improving lives and strengthening communities and the vision of empowering citizens to meet community challenges to make young children’s lives better by engaging multiple community members and organizations in activities designed to surround children with learning opportunities. This project will help communities deploy public television early literacy resources and activities in multiple venues to help increase the school readiness of children in their communities. Parents and other community members will be empowered to play a greater role in supporting their children’s learning through an anytime-is-learning-time approach to everyday experiences. This project will help meet the priority that all Iowa Youth have the assets for success, particularly through school achievement by building the foundational skills to be support grade level reading ability by third grade. The rollout will focus on recruiting communities with high concentrations of economically disadvantaged children and also communities with schools identified as being in need of assistance by the Iowa Department of Education.

Member Duties : 1. The VISTA member will serve as a liaison with community organizations in the Ready for School project in selected communities. 2. The VISTA member will develop and conduct a series of trainings of community partner organization staff members. 3. The VISTA member will develop and implement strategies to measure outcomes of Ready for School activities in targeted communities. 4. The VISTA member will work to identify and recruit community partners for the FY 2015 cycle of the Ready for School project.
