Tackling Obstacles & Raising College Hopes -Northfield, MN

Located 45 minutes south of the Twin Cities in the town of Northfield, Minnesota, the Northfield Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) was started as a collaboration between the City of Northfield, Northfield Public Schools, and Northfield Hospital. HCI's aim is to build collaboration between community entities to help identify needs for young people and to work together to meet these needs. The VISTA will work specifically with one of HCI’s major initiatives – Tackling Obstacles and Raising College Hopes (TORCH). TORCH has earned state and national acclaim for its work in helping to increase the high school graduation and postsecondary attendance rates of Northfield’s low-income and minority students. The VISTA will develop and launch the TORCH Summer Job/Internship Program for low-income Northfield young adults who are in high school and college. The program will help connect these individuals with local businesses and entrepreneurs for summer employment and internship opportunities in potential career areas. The VISTA will help identify local businesses interested in partnering on this program. The VISTA will create an interview process for selecting the young adults to participate, as well as an orientation and ongoing training program throughout the summer to ensure that the participants are gaining the job and entrepreneurial skills they will need to be successful both over the summer and beyond. In addition, the VISTA will be responsible for arranging at least monthly workshops for middle school students, high school students, and/or graduates on topics related to career exploration and entrepreneurship. These will provide the chance for students to gain exposure to new careers and to learn about entrepreneurship and the possibilities of starting a business. Finally, the VISTA will develop a program to help volunteers assist low-income youth with launching entrepreneurial initiatives. Spanish language skills are preferred, not required.
