Summer Reads - Fairmont, MN (LitMN)

Fairmont Community Education and Recreation (CER) has offered lifelong learning and leisure opportunities for all ages for 50 years in this area of southern Minnesota. Our mission is to actively meet the changing needs of our area. Promoting reading in our younger citizens as a positive experience is recognized as being of primary importance to the success of each child in future educational goals. “Reading Adventures with Summer Reads-Fairmont CER” will feature a variety of opportunities and literacy experiences to enrich children’s learning when school is not in session. Summer Reads Mentors will help children develop a regular habit of reading through creative and fun enrichment activities. Currently Fairmont Elementary Schools has a 50% free & reduced lunch rate. Referrals are made through parents and teachers in area schools, libraries, and childcare agencies. Priority is given to referrals of students with special needs and language barriers. Curriculum resources will be available from local school programs for each individual to enhance their reading skills and fight the summer slide often seen in youth who lack access to learning opportunities throughout the summer months. *Positions are part of Literacy Minnesota’s Summer Reads program, which trains and places about 60 AmeriCorps VISTA members as K-5 children’s literacy mentors in schools, libraries and out-of-school-time programs. About half of members serve outside the Twin Cities metro.
