Summer Reads- Fairmont, MN
Fairmont Community Education and Recreation (CER) has offered lifelong learning and leisure opportunities for all ages for 46 years in this area of southern Minnesota. Our mission is to actively meet the changing needs of our area. Promoting reading in our younger citizens as a positive experience, is recognized as being of primary importance to the success of each child in future educational goals. “Reading Adventures with Summer Reads-Fairmont CER” will feature a variety of opportunities and literacy experiences to enrich children’s learning when school is not in session. VISTAs will help children develop a regular habit of reading through creative and fun enrichment activities. Currently Fairmont Elementary Schools has a 53% free & reduced lunch rate with a high school graduation rate of 90%. Referrals are made through parents and teachers of area schools, libraries and child care agencies. Priority is given to referrals with special needs and language barriers from local teachers in both public and non-public schools. Curriculum resources will be available from local school programs for each individual to enhance their reading skills and fight the summer slide often seen in youth who lose literacy skills without the opportunity to continue learning on a regular basis. These positions are part of the Summer Reads program of Minnesota Literacy Council, which provides tutoring and literacy-focused enrichment to children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries and nonprofits across the state through the leadership of AmeriCorps VISTAs. The program aims to help low-income children improve reading and instill a love of learning, and also to provide VISTAs with hands-on experience in education and build their community leadership.
