Great Strides places members in rural Schools in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont in order to increase student engagement through targeted mentoring support. Stipended members will implement the Check & Connect mentoring program (a research-based intervention for academically disengaged K-12 students) in rural nonprofits and schools, while Education Award Only Members will implement Connect2Complete (a pilot program utilizing peer mentoring and service-learning) to engage low-income college students. AmeriCorps members will be responsible for increasing student academic engagement, ultimately increasing economic success. In addition, AmeriCorps members will leverage volunteers to engage in Check & Connect and Connect2Complete mentoring and in-school/afterschool service-learning, academic support, parental engagement, and enrichment interventions. Lake Region Union High School is a community of dynamic learners who create an inclusive environment characterized by safety and respect. Lake Region offers a comprehensive curriculum grounded in the skills necessary for academic achievement, and teachers use diverse strategies to engage all students in learning. Students have the opportunity to develop intellectually, socially and personally through academic and extracurricular activities. Lake Region students and graduates are prepared to set goals and to continue learning. Lake Region Union High School serves 6 sending towns. These towns include: Albany, Orleans, Barton, Irasburg, Brownington, Glover, and Westmore. Member Duties : Member will coordinate a mentoring program focused on academic support for students. They will oversee the operation and matching of students in addition to organizing activities such as career/job fairs, college info nights, SAT prep classes, etc. Member will also support an existing academic support program where they would work individually and in small groups with struggling intentional and non-intentional learners.
