Summer Reads- Rochester, MN

Change a child’s life this summer by joining Summer Reads, an AmeriCorps VISTA program of the Minnesota Literacy Council! While specific roles and responsibilities of individual VISTAs vary depending on site placements, Summer Reads provides high-quality literacy tutoring to low-income children in grades K-3 in schools, libraries and community organizations across the state. Boys & Girls Club of Rochester is the leading youth serving organization in Rochester providing programming and opportunities to youth ages 6-18 years old in our core areas including Academic Success, Health & Life skills, Character & Leadership and the Arts. The mission of our organization is to provide all youth, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring community members. The Summer Reads program will help provide our youth high-quality literacy tutoring with a focus on ages 6-12 years old. The Summer Reads program objectives consist of 1) sustaining or improving children’s literacy skills over the summer; and 2) improving children’s engagement with reading. You will be focusing your time facilitating, planning, and assessing reading programs. Assessments throughout the summer will be conducted by Summer Reads VISTAs to evaluate and document children’s progress. The Summer Reads program is a great opportunity for you to engage with youth, develop relationships to support youth development, while also strengthening your skills of processes – assessing, developing, implementing and reviewing of literacy programs.
