MLC AmeriCorps places members in Maine & New Hampshire schools &nonprofit organizations serving K-12 English Language Learners. This program increases academic engagement among ELL students through implementing Social Emotional Learning practices. Members implement SEL supporting students through weekly meetings with 15-25 students. Members will 1) prioritize youth engagement, 2) facilitate peer to peer engagement, 3) coach youth through goal setting, and 4) encourage staff engagement. In addition, members leverage volunteers to engage in mentoring and in-school/after-school School Skills Support, Aspirations support, Enrichment, and Community Engagement programs. The Multilingual and Multicultural Center provides programming support for all students and families whose home language is not English. To ensure equal access to educational opportunities for these students, the Center provides support services in the areas of classroom instruction, summer academic programs, staff development, curriculum and materials development, assessment, parent and community outreach. Over the years, Portland's Multilingual community has grown exponentially and become increasingly more diverse. Currently, the district has over 1,800 students who come from homes where over 60 different languages are spoken. The students represent about 25% of Portland Public Schools' total enrollment; some 1,400 of them are identified as English Language Learners. Members will become part of "Make IT Happen" program. "Make IT Happen!" is an academic support and college readiness program at the middle & high school levels to help ELLs. Each school will have an on-site supervisor. The member will become an integral part of each school's unique culture and work closely with staff members as well as students and volunteers. AmeriCorps Members will be placed at one of Portland's public schools. Further info regarding the schools may be found at www.portlandpublicschools.org.
