The DREAM Program, Inc. is a Vermont-based mentoring organization that pairs college students with children living in low-income housing communities in long-lasting, positive mentoring relationships. The mission of the program is to “build communities of families and college students that empower children from affordable housing neighborhoods to recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams.” We achieve our mission by mixing best practices of one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring, and community development with weekly visits to college campuses, adventure trips, and free summer and winter residential camping experiences at Camp DREAM. The DREAM Program, Inc was incorporated in November of 2001 co-founded by two graduating Dartmouth College mentors. Nearly 12 years later, DREAM has expanded its Vermont program to include the Boston area, and we are still growing! Ten years later DREAM is present at nine college campuses in Vermont and New Hampshire. In Vermont alone, we serve over 250 children and boast an alumni organization of almost 1,200 mentors and children. In 2004, DREAM purchased 50 acres of land in Fletcher, Vermont to provide a summer and winter residential camp to the children and mentors of DREAM. And in 2010 DREAM was named #14 of the Best 50 Companies for whom to work by Outside Magazine! VYDC members will have a large, immediate impact on the youth who attend Camp DREAM this summer. Members will work both directly and indirectly with youth between the ages of 8-18 to help them build their own communities and achieve greater self-confidence, all through challenging, engaging, and fun activities. DREAM works with children who live in some of the most at-risk neighborhoods in Vermont. DREAM is the only mentoring program that has organically developed to meet the very unique needs and challenges of this population and seek to address poverty holistically, one youth at a time.
