ShareCorps-Knox Co. Head Start, Family Engagement Specialist
 
 
 
Knox County Head Start (KCHS) is an innovative early childhood and family engagement organization identified as one of ten National Head Start Centers of Excellence in 2010. KCHS provides free Head Start preschool and family engagement services for over 250 children and their families annually, Early Head Start programming for 75 pregnant moms, infants and toddlers, and child care services for children 6 weeks thru school age for approximately 100 children. KCHS provides parenting training to program participants and local community members for families with children prenatally to age 12. KCHS focuses on developing strong emotional-intelligence skills in adults and children, utilizing the Conscious Discipline approach to promoting healthy connections between adults and children. For forty-six years, KCHS has provided Head Start services preparing children for success in school and in life, and in recent years has expanded to serve infants and toddlers, and to provide parenting education and child care services to support family self-sufficiency. KCHS commits to extensive community partnerships designed to enhance the well being of the families served and the larger community, and seeks to development enhanced family engagement in the program's role as advocates for low-income families It is our intent that advocacy for and with families will empower families through increased engagement, training and the development of skills in support of self-sufficiency. KCHS is a leader in Knox County and the State of Ohio in providing high quality early care and education and in ensuring that children receive the head start they need for success in school and in life.

Member Duties : The Family Engagement Specialist will be working to develop and support implementation of the 5-2-1-0 Campaign to increase children and families’ healthy lifestyle choices towards improved health and a reduction in childhood obesity. This campaign will be promoted to the 400 children and families served by KCHS, and expanded in partnership with at least one other early childhood provider within the community, with the intent of establishing the foundation for ongoing programming in future years. The Family Engagement Specialist will also build collaborations to coordinate and reduce barriers to attendance and engagement in support of parenting, personal skill development, family literacy and financial literacy trainings promoting healthy futures and economic opportunities for children and their families.
