NC Campus Compact VISTA (2013-14)

The NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA program places a VISTA member at a community or campus host site to build a partnership and develop projects that leverage higher education resources to assist local, low-income people. Projects may focus on education (K-12, especially access to post-secondary education), economic opportunity (especially housing and financial literacy), or healthy futures (especially food security). The VISTA member serves as a primary link between the two organizations, with a goal of building the capacity of the community-based organization. Communities across our state face many challenges. The Opportunity Index ranks North Carolina 36th among the states, due to levels of poverty, unemployment, and youth unemployment that exceed national averages; and levels of high school graduation and access to post-secondary education that fall below the mark. At the same time, according to CNCS data on volunteering and civic life in America, North Carolina ranks 33rd in the percent of residents who regularly volunteer. NC Campus Compact VISTAs can address both of these concerns by: 1) engaging college students, faculty, and staff with key community partners that serve low-income people, and 2) building the capacity of those community-based organizations to better serve clients and meet community needs. NC Campus Compact is a coalition of 38 public, independent and community colleges that are committed to being "engaged campuses" that enhance a student's sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness of community, and impact the community by partnering with local organizations to address real needs.

Member Duties : NC Campus Compact AmeriCorps*VISTA members work with a community agency and a campus to develop a partnership that addresses local needs in one of three areas: education (especially K-12 success or access to post-secondary education), economic opportunity (especially housing or financial literacy), or healthy futures (especially food security). The specific nature and objectives of the project vary depending on host site. Most VISTA members share work time between campus and community partner offices, and thereby gain experience in both non-profit and higher education arenas. Member activities may include: * developing processes, materials, and tools for volunteer recruitment, training, and coordination * establishing community or campus leadership teams around issues of concern * designing internship positions at community partner * seeking financial support for community partner * coordinating national day of service events * creating publicity and outreach materials.
