ShareCorps-F.G., Community Food Education Development

Franklinton Gardens is a community urban farming initiative that began in 2007 as a single community plot garden, and has grown to encompass seven garden sites within the Franklinton neighborhood. Franklinton is an urban Appalachian near-west side neighborhood of Columbus, OH. The neighborhood is wracked with poverty and food access issues and Franklinton Gardens arose to help ameliorate such food access problems. Franklinton Gardens exists to create a more just and peaceable Franklinton community by helping to provide neighborhood access to fresh healthy food, by creating beauty through productive re-purposing of vacant spaces, and by establishing garden-based venues for community interaction. Franklinton Gardens grew over 5000 lbs of produce in the 2012 growing season, and distributed nearly all of it throughout Franklinton via their weekday farm stand and a farmers market in Franklinton, and through direct donation of the produce to area food pantries. In addition to working towards food equity within the neighborhood. Franklinton Gardens strives to set a standard for efficient and productive urban farming within Columbus, OH. All of our operation is run organically and is heavily influenced by principles of permaculture. We hope to exponentially increase our produce production numbers in 2013, and expand our presence to multiple food pantries, community meals, and restaurants throughout the neighborhood.
