Healthy Lunch, Healthy Lives: School Meals Reform in Sitka

We aim to alleviate poverty in Southeast Alaska by expanding Pacific High School’s unique student-scratch-made lunch program into breakfast, after school snack, and summer meal programs serving low income children throughout the Sitka School District. The volunteer will develop new resources and leverage existing resources to create an integrated program to include local food sourcing, farm-to-school, educational, and student employment components. Good nutrition is a key factor in breaking the cycle of poverty— it is indisputably linked to long-term physical and emotional health, as well as education and employment success. Now we have the opportunity to expand our program into new school food markets, expanding our reach beyond PHS and bringing fresh, local, healthy and delicious food to low income students of all ages in Sitka. In creating this program, we both meet immediate nutritional needs and develop skills so that students may better meet their own needs in the future. PHS is a small alternative school of choice located in Sitka, Alaska. Founded in 1992, PHS serves youth ages 14-21 at risk of dropping out. Students work toward a high school diploma and to acquire the skills necessary to live a successful life. At any given time, about 35 students attend PHS, but over 50 students pass through our doors each year due to high transiency rates. A majority of PHS students are Alaska Native, and most are eligible for free or reduced lunch, with 25-50% experiencing homelessness and 15% pregnant or parenting. _____Please apply online by August 15, 2014. Candidates will be contacted for interviews in late August and final selection will happen by mid-September. The successful candidate will attend training and begin service on Nov 18, 2014. **Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1178), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550), health benefits, child care assistance, training, and an Education Award ($5,645).
