STEM Coordinator Education & Technologies (Anchorage)

The VISTA volunteer will focus efforts on existing partnerships for educational opportunities at the K-12 level, and investigate how broadband technologies can be used to maximize entrepreneurship and learning opportunities. The total project will focus on 3 primary objectives. 1) Partnering with Junior Achievement in Alaska to provide dedicated training which has been proven to improve student's classroom performance and completion of high school. 2) Facilitate the Ocean Science Curriculum Working Group (Kodiak Island Borough School District, NOAA and University of Alaska) as they develop and implement a curriculum specific to Southwest Alaska school districts. 3) Building on South West Alaska Municipal Conference (SWAMC)efforts to develop Broadband Strategy and Economic Development opportunities using newly deployed internet technologies; with specific efforts towards outlining requirements to establish innovation centers providing a broadband connection, computer hardware and business support. The two learning objectives would be carried forward with the third entrepreneurial objective, the innovation center, where students and other community members would be given direction and flexibility for transforming new skills into community development projects and jobs. Travel to rural communities in Southwest Alaska will be a requirement. Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550) for members moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, training, and an Education Award ($5,730) or cash stipend ($1,500).
