New Haven Education: Common Ground H.S.

Founded in 1997 by the New Haven Ecology Project, Common Ground launched as the nation’s first charter high school focused on the urban environment and serving low-income students. Today, Common Ground High School is creating the next generation of successful college students and powerful environmental leaders. Our students graduate with the knowledge, skills and motivation to live healthy, powerful, productive and sustainable lives. The environment serves as the organizing context of Common Ground’s standards-based curriculum, and active, authentic learning is employed as the primary vehicle for developing academic excellence, strong character, environmental understanding, and a commitment to community in our students. Our three campuses – West Rock Ridge State Park, a 20-acre urban farm, and the City of New Haven – provide powerful laboratories for student learning. Common Ground is one of seven community organizations taking part in the New Haven Education AmeriCorps VISTA Project, sponsored by the Agency on Aging of South Central Connecticut, in order to improve the capacity of organizations to close the achievement gap by increasing access to programs which improve childhood literacy, college-readiness, and wraparound services in New Haven.
