Juvenile Justice Coordinator 2 (Court, Law, Educ)

Nearly half of juveniles detained by police in Rhode Island are minority youth, exceeding their proportion in the population, yet few commit serious offenses where detention/incarceration is the only option - only 4% of juvenile offenses are violent. The VISTA will join a second VISTA in coordinating efforts to promote system change and expanded services for minority juveniles. VISTA #2 focus is Court, Law Enforcement and Education systems, with focus on: availability of legal interpretation, promoting graduated sanctions models, defining roles of police in schools, training of police, understanding the numbers and experiences of juveniles in the system and infusing Youth voices into the project.
