Digital Learning Coordinator - School on Wheels

The mission of School on Wheels, Inc. is the enhancement of educational opportunities for homeless children from kindergarten through the twelfth grade. Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest quality education possible. We currently accomplish this through matching students with a one-on-one volunteer tutor. In order to better achieve our mission, the VISTA member will work to enhance our program and improve student outcomes through educational technology, and also reach more students through virtual online tutoring. Since our students have missed significantly more school than non-homeless students, they come to us with unique obstacles that demand a customized plan for addressing deficiencies in their education. By enhancing our core academic program and incorporating educational technology, our volunteer tutors will be able to supplement traditional tutoring with online and adaptive tools. Adaptive computer programs will help to determine the students' academic strengths and weaknesses, allow them to work at their own pace to fill in the gaps in their education, and provide individualized curricula that tutors can utilize. These programs can also be set up for a group tutoring format to allow tutors to rotate and work with multiple students at one time. The number of students tutored will also increase by setting up online tutoring as a regular component of our program, where tutors can meet each week with students in a virtual environment. In order to effectively measure the impact of these program enhancements, the member will be responsible for collecting outcomes which determine both strengths of the revised tools and highlight areas in need of improvement. Extensive local travel will be required to set up this component of our program. Reimbursement for project-related travel will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from a small but mighty non-profit organization.
