SERVE Philadelphia - Adult Literacy Mentoring Partnership

Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service is accepting applications for two full time SERVE Philadelphia AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve for a period of one year on projects designed to enhance adult literacy education, support neighborhood parks, and strengthen community volunteer networks. The AmeriCorps VISTA working on this particular project will drive Year 3 of the Adult Learner Mentoring Partnership, housed in the Mayor's Commission on Literacy (MCOL). We are looking for a VISTA with an excellent work ethic, passion for collaboration, attention to detail, and strong interest in organizational development. The goal of this initiative is to provide new learners with the support and guidance that will help them to achieve their educational and career goals. The Adult Learner Mentoring Partnership is increasing adult education providers’ capacity to engage volunteers in efforts to promote learner retention and persistence. As this is the final year of this VISTA project, the VISTA will be deeply involved in ensuring the long term sustainability of this important initiative and will have ample opportunities to collaborate with other volunteer-supported initiatives within the MCOL. An emphasis will be placed on helping mentors best support on-line learners who are developing their comfort level with technology as they simultaneously strive to build literacy skills.
