University of Georgia VISTA Network: School Gardens
 
 
 
As part of a network of VISTAs, this VISTA is placed at a Title I middle school in Athens-Clarke County, GA to develop and implement integrated programs incorporating gardening, nutrition, and sustainability to improve the diet and health of middle school children. Activities include establishing programs with children, university students, and school personnel to support and maintain school gardens, to enhance access to fresh fruits and vegetables, to reduce food waste, and to enhance sustainability, both during the school day, after school, and during the summer. Priority will be given to individuals who are recent graduates, have gardening experience, have an academic interest and background in related issues, and have previous volunteer experience with school children. Ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies, work independently, travel (within Clarke County), and utilize social media is required.

Member Duties : Recruit and train volunteers to assist with school gardens, develop and implement garden, nutrition, and sustainability programs at a middle school, support food waste reduction and promote increased use of fresh produce in the school cafeteria, collaborate with others in school garden network, track/evaluate efforts, and build capacity for program sustainability.
