Veterans Recovery Project of CT - Leader

The Veterans Recovery Project of Connecticut (VRPCT) is a multi-site AmeriCorps VISTA project consisting of a collaboration of organizations in the New Haven and Bridgeport areas that serve Veterans experiencing homelessness, unemployment, legal issues, and serious mental illness. The VISTA Leader will bring emphatic change to the efforts of project sponsor Columbus House and its partnering host sites by enabling VISTA members to work together to realize a common goal: helping veterans achieve independence. Seven VISTAs will serve with the following partner organizations: Columbus House, Errera Community Care Center, CT Veterans Legal Center, and Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County. Project sponsor Columbus House serves those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by providing shelter and housing and by fostering personal growth. Clients include veterans, whose numbers have grown annually, from 5% of our clients in 2008 to 18% in the current year, 2012. Columbus House dedicates itself to assisting veterans in finding employment; eliminating internalized stigma; increasing utilization of VA services; retaining pro bono help for court cases involving housing, insurance, and family problems; finding health services; and securing emergency shelter and transitional housing. Columbus House also seeks to help veterans who enter college by facilitating their integration into academic life. Finally, Columbus House seeks ways by which independent veterans can help fellow veterans who are experiencing these problems.
