First 5 Los Angeles Best Start Community
 
 
 
First 5 LA’s place-based approach, known as Best Start Communities (BSC) focuses on strengthening families while fostering the communities’ ability to create & sustain safe & nurturing places for children to grow & thrive. Partnering with communities, empowering, strengthening & unifying them to achieve outcomes to improve the lives of children & families & to ensure children are: (1) born healthy; (2) maintain a healthy weight; (3) safe from abuse & neglect; & (4) ready for kindergarten. The 14 Best Start Communities include: Central Long Beach; Compton/East Compton; East Los Angeles; Lancaster; Metro LA; Pacoima; Palmdale; Panorama City; South El Monte/El Monte; South LA, Broadway-Manchester; South LA, West Athens; Southeast Los Angeles; Watts/Willowbrook & Wilmington. Criteria used to select these communities included need, community leadership commitment, community infrastructure, potential for partnership, natural community boundaries & representation of diverse populations. Three strategies will be utilized that are designed to work in an integrated way to collectively impact the communities include: 1) Family Strengthening strategies such as Welcome Baby & Select Home Visitation Program(s) are designed to improve parent-child bonding, & increase parents’ child development knowledge; ; 2) Capacity Building strategies focus on Resident-Based Organizing which is designed to increase community member relationship building & social networks, & will build on existing community resources & strengthen its capacity to support families. Areas of focus include community engagement, leadership, infrastructure & investment activities; & 3) Systems improvement activities – using countywide strategies that encompass policy, public education, designed to create coordinated & responsive systems; & community awareness of opportunities to coordinate & partner with First 5-led efforts (i.e., 211, Healthy Kids, LA Universal Preschool, etc.). http://beststartla.org/

Member Duties : Up to 5 VISTA members will be placed to implement strategies to address the priorities identified by each Best Start Community Partnership (BSCP). The VISTA members will work with identified communities to coordinate and plan outreach activities; build collaborations and networks; conduct needs assessments, community asset mapping, coordinate programs and presentations; facilitate meetings with BSCP members, stakeholders, community and the public; coordinate and provide training workshops and work groups; identify/coordinate resource and program development projects; increase volunteerism, maintains BSC’s comprehensive database and collaborate with other local service agencies, governmental institutions, foundations, schools and businesses to identify additional support for strategic partners.
