Operation Second Wind
Operation Second Wind will recruit, train, and engage Mesa area residents, most of whom are aged 55 or over, as service delivery professionals at non-profit human, health, and education services agencies in the Community. Mesa United Way's programs and partner agencies include, but are not limited to, Helen's Hope Chest, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), A New Leaf, East Valley Adult Resources, Lutheran Social Services, Save the Family, The Salvation Army, YMCA and Mesa Community Action Network. First, AmeriCorps members will be assigned to serve at one of the participating agency service sites scattered throughout the city. Members will be assigned to a specific service-delivery office or location and to a specific "mentor-trainer" within that office. Initially serving in what might be roughly equivalent to an "intern" capacity, the objective would be that the Member would "learn the ropes" of service-delivery from that specific agency's perspective. Within the first three months of service, each member will also take part in a three-day classroom training in human development and professional service delivery. This training experience will conclude with a written exam and, upon successful completion, members will receive a certificate. AmeriCorps members will not be placed in roles or positions which either duplicate services and work of existing personnel or displace existing employees or employment positions. The objective of Operation Second Wind is to increase the quantity and quality of critical and emergency services available to individuals and families within the community. A total of 36 positions will be available within Operation Second Wind's framework. Of these twenty (20) will be half time (950 total hours of service), ten (10) will be "reduced half time" (700 hours),six (6) will be quarter-time (480 hours) and two (2) will be "minimum time" (320 hours) . Each will be posted as individual positions on the Mesa United Way website.
