ENGAGE Social Issues Project

The ENGAGE Social Issues Project is a partnership formed between The Center for Community Engagement & Learning, University of Alaska Anchorage, and the Greater Anchorage Community to increase the capacity of the Greater Anchorage community to effectively address the four poverty issue areas identified by the community. The VISTA member will coordinate this activity for the second year and will work to increase the capacity of the partnership to provide services or activities that would more efficiently meet the needs of those impacted by poverty and lacking success in the target areas of affordable housing, food security, educational success, and culturally appropriate health services. The VISTA member will recruit campus and community volunteers, coordinate volunteers, and arrange special events on the campus and community to: 1) expand existing food distribution services, 2) increase academic success for Alaska Native and refugee students, 3) improve services to the homeless, and 4) increase health outcomes for marginalized groups. The position is based in the CCEL office with easy access to the community and required participation as a member of the CCEL Advisory Council composed of community members, UAA faculty and staff and students. The VISTA member will also work with ENGAGE student liaisons who work as “site supervisors” for the projects.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will work within the four core areas to increase the specific objectives of the partnership in each area. For food security, efficiency in services delivered and the number and type of services offered at New Hope for the Last Frontier is the goal, and placement and training of volunteers will be important, as well as connecting relevant wrap-around services to food distribution sites and ensuring effective communication. For student academic success, training and placement of volunteer mentors and developing an effective system for monitoring and evaluating success will be key. At least one meeting or forum will be arranged in the Mountain View and Fairview neighborhoods regarding affordable housing to improve community awareness of homelessness and needed services. Community groups working to address health disparities will be connected to new resources and partnerships within the university and have needed marketing materials.
