Artist in Service - Service Learning

Arts Corps’ service learning program mobilizes the capacities of accomplished artists possessing a strong youth development background to serve in low-income communities to meet critical educational needs. AmeriCorps members will collaborate with teachers and service learning staff to develop and facilitate arts-based service learning projects, teach arts skills and cultivate students’ creative capacities, including imagination, critical thinking, persistence and risk-taking; increase student motivation and engagement in school; and grow the capacity of the community to shape and sustain an ongoing arts-rich learning environment. Members will support service learning as part of a collaboration between Arts Corp and Seattle Public Schools in the districts’ engagement zone that includes Aki Kurose and Mercer Middle Schools and Cleveland High School—all schools with a majority low-income student population. Students will work with the AmeriCorps member to receive arts and service education, design their service project and strengthen communities through murals, inter-generational performances and exhibits at public venues such as community centers, retirement centers, schools, and low-income housing units. Each member will provide direct programming 32 hours per week, with an additional 8 hours per week spent in professional development, service and planning off site.
