IRC - Resource/Volunteer Coordinator for Somali Organization

Somali Family Service of San Diego SFS was established in 2000 as a non-profit, community-based social service organization. SFS has been addressing critical needs and concerns of approximately 30,000 Somali refugees and immigrants as well as other East African communities in San Diego County, primarily in the City Heights area. Since its inception, the organization has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services to the East African community, easing their transition and ensuring successful functioning in their new home. SFS helps to increase quality of life for many refugee and immigrant families by providing programs that encourage stronger English abilities and literacy, build job skills and financial literacy, assist in familiarization with American culture, advise on immigration and citizenship requirements, offer cultural education and translation services, and help with the access to quality health care through outreach, education and advocacy. In addition, SFS shares community information through its newsletter Taxan and via the organizations website. SFSs programs reach between 2,000-2,500 members of the community per year.
