Neighborhood House - Youth Leadership

Neighborhood House’s mission to change the life trajectory of low-income people relies on cutting-edge services to the community. It demands excellence from inspired people who are passionate about transforming the conditions of poverty. We provide high-quality programs to diverse communities with a staff of 200 representing a wide range of cultures and 43 different languages and dialects. Neighborhood House’s Youth Empowered with Leadership Strengths Program (YELS) is a year-round, enrollment-based program for middle and high school youth (ages 13 – 18) living in the High Point HOPE VI public housing redevelopment in West Seattle. YELS encourages participation from youth coming from a variety of backgrounds. The program maintains that youth are experts in their experience, and creates opportunities for young people to share their lives in a safe space. Youth have an opportunity to explore new experiences with their cohort, engage in conversation, and learn from each other, as well as adults who come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. YELS ultimately helps youth explore their potential through intergenerational, multicultural and community-based programs that promote self-awareness, sense of purpose and personal power to create social and personal change. YELS helps High Point youth to use their voice and create positive action in the community for issues about which they are passionate. Utilizing culinary arts, visual arts, technology, outdoor sports and environmental education, YELS youth showcase their talents, execute community-wide events, and become role models to other High Point youth.
