Harlem Lacrosse and Leadership Development Associate

HLL currently operates out of two sites in Harlem: The Frederick Douglass Academy & The Sojourner Truth School, both serve students from 6th through 12th grade — mostly from low-income Harlem & Bronx families. We aspire to put each of our participants on a path to college and to become exemplary members of their current & future communities. VISTA contributions will enable HLL to expand the reach of its programming. There is an increasing demand in the populations we serve for positive mentors and meaningful after-school programs. Over the past three years our program has produced substantial improvement in players’ graduation rates, grades, and behavior. Our players represent the diversity of the student population, including those with learning disabilities and special needs. We provide admissions counseling to our students & to their families. 12 HLL students are currently enrolled at prestigious boarding schools on full scholarships. We feel that all children, and especially those with special needs, deserve effective after-school programming to meet their full potential. HLL operates a highly competitive middle school lacrosse program and offers daily lunchtime study halls for its participants. All five of the special-education 8th graders on the 2010 team graduated middle school, and they are the first five FDA special education students to be academically eligible and play on a varsity sport in the high school. Lacrosse is the perfect vehicle for developing life skills and leadership. Teamwork, communication, dedication, and perseverance are among the many qualities that are fostered. The game’s ties to the university system and its unfulfilled potential in low-income urban areas enable us to provide opportunity beyond Harlem. Our ongoing partnerships with lax communities beyond NYC broaden players’ experiences & skill sets. We look forward to seeing your application!

Member Duties : VISTAs will directly affect the expansion of our organization in capacities that include but are not limited to: organization of fundraising events, student-data tracking/management, grant generation, and volunteer/staff recruitment. VISTA candidates should be able to work independently on a multitude of projects and enjoy working with HLL’s board members to see projects to completion. HLL seeks a hard-working, enthusiastic and creative individual to help our young organization grow and deliver the best and most effective programming for the children we serve. A VISTA member will use a Salesforce-driven database platform for volunteers, donation-tracking and student-centered data. E.g. when incoming volunteers participate in 1:1 mentoring & tutoring, the database will provide student and volunteer contact information to help liaise between the volunteer and the student’s family. VISTAs will incorporate the real-time, electronic tracking of student grades into this platform.
