New Beginnings-Without Violence and Abuse Development VISTA

One in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and one in three women will experience sexual violence in her lifetime (NNEDV). Due to barriers faced by victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence, there is a high correlation between poverty and those whose lives have been affected by violence. Some of these barriers include: a lack of safe, affordable housing, lack of childcare and/or transportation resulting in the inability to find employment, lack of affordable health care, and the inability to access affordable legal assistance. Additionally, many victims and survivors also suffer from co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse issues. As a result, lengthy emergency shelter stays, increased complex case management needs, and few options for transitional housing and independent living are a reality for many families living in poverty and experiencing violence. New Beginnings is one of fourteen member programs of the New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence. As the Coalition's specialist agency in Belknap County since 1991, New Beginnings strives to provide services to everyone whose lives have been affected by domestic and sexual violence and stalking. New Beginnings offers free and confidential services including a twenty-four hour crisis line, one to one support and advocacy, court accompaniment, twenty-four hour accompaniment to local hospitals and police departments, support groups for children, teens and adults and community outreach and education.
