VYT- Big Picture South Burlington

Big Picture South Burlington is an innovative school-within-a-school, serving students, especially those who are low-income, who want a more personally meaningful education experience that enhances skills & provides support needed to graduate. Our mission is to empower youth through relentless commitment to student-centered learning & personal growth in which youth learn the skills to transcend & avoid poverty. Students work with faculty to design individualized curriculum based on their interests, skills, & goals. Students learn through internships, independent projects, workshops, travel, & group experiences such as service learning trips. Students intern at organizations ranging from farms to fashion-design firms. They have done projects ranging from organizing a theater performance for pre-schoolers to producing educational programming at the local television station. BPSB is a democratic learning community, in which students have voice on key decisions such as our weekly schedule, rules & expectations, and curriculum choices. We also have a robust service program including a month long service learning course on current topics. We have been recognized as being at the cutting edge of education, and we regularly host visitors & make presentations. As we are a student-centered school, students do much of that hosting and presenting, and their pride and excitement for their school is strong. The VISTA is integral in marketing, creating projects, curriculum, and experiences that empower low-income students and impact education. We know that developing twenty-first century skills and having internship experiences give students the cultural capital to be successful and overcome poverty. Therefore, the end goal of all the programs developed by the VISTA is cultivating skills, passion, and capacity for success for all of our students.
