Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica Summer STEM/College Bound

Join the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica College Bound initiative, and help make a difference this summer! Come and teach K-12 students new skills and prepare for college. Summer associates will 1) teach basic science, computer and math skills, and also lead students in arts, sports & recreation, and character & leadership activities; 2) promote a college bound culture by introducing students and their parents to A-G requirements, financial aid process, and key academic skills; and 3) lead students in recreational and college campus field trips. An understanding and interest in STEM (particularly computer technology, math and science) subjects is helpful, along with experience in youth development programs. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica (SMBGC) has been serving communities for 66 years. SMBGC serves those who otherwise would not have opportunities for academic success and struggling students from low income and disadvantaged homes from the Greater Los Angeles area. This program focuses on reducing summer learning loss with elementary, middle and high school grade level students. The goal of our initiative also to introduce and strengthen interest in our College Bound program, which is to make entrance into post-secondary education a possibility for those who otherwise would not have the opportunity through one-on-one support through the college-bound process. Ninety percent of participants will be the first in their family to graduate from high school and 75 percent are from low income families. For more information on the importance of this topic, please visit http://www.gse.harvard.edu/news_events/features/2011/Pathways_to_Prosperity_Feb2011.pdf.
